Your Earthly Life vs. Eternity
Did you know that you are in a constant fight? I guess a more accurate word would be battle. If you are paying attention you can probably feel it. Actually, you can probably feel it even if you aren't paying attention. Maybe you feel like something is just not quite right, or that something is missing from your life. Your life is a constant battle against sin and grace, light and dark, good and evil, Jesus and Satan. We wake up every single day with lots of choices and battles ahead of us to fight. How do you know whether you are fighting for the right side?
What is also interesting is the way Pastor Jason contrasted the way we talk about our eternity to how we should talk about it. I hear it all the time: " I hope I make to Heaven". Well, we don't have a hope so salvation, we have a know so salvation. Pastor Jason made a comparison of our lives to a rope. He showed us a rope and held out a small portion of it between his hands. This section of rope was a representation of our lives here on Earth. Then he started pulling at the rope, bringing more and more of it into his hands. Saying that the rest of the rope represented our eternal life. Personally, this is one of my favorite props that Pastor Jason has ever used.
1 Timothy 6:12 ESV
Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
You were made for eternity. You were not made for the things of this Earth. You were created by God himself so that you could live in eternity with Him. Pretty amazing right?? The problem is that the world we live in now can prevent us from reaching that eternity. The sin in our lives can actually keep us from the eternity that we were meant to live.
It is human nature to get attached to the things on this Earth that we are used to and are comfortable with. However, we need to remember that everything on this Earth is temporary if you are a child of God. If you have asked God to be a part of your life, one day everything on Earth will fade away and you will get the chance to live in the eternity that God created you for. The Bible actually tells us that the Earth will be destroyed by fire. All that we truly have lies in our relationship and salvation in our God.
Ask yourself: What is controlling your life and your actions today? The here and now or eternity?
Paul tells us that you have to keep focused on the fight for your eternal life. "Fight the good fight of faith" We have to work hard to keep our mind and our actions on things that are worthy of that eternal life. One of the ways we can do that is to live in our eternal life now. I hear from people all the time, I hope I go to Heaven.
Satan also knows the truths of God. The difference is, he is actively trying to get us to reject those truths. He loves nothing more than to see us fail our purpose in life. He loves to see us drifting through our lives without keeping our faith in God. We have to remember that while we are drifting around trying to figure out our purpose, that Jesus is our anchor. He is the anchor that brings us back to the word of God and to our salvation. You can't live like the world wants you to live and also be living for God.
John 14:6 ESV
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
Jesus has made Himself within reach. When He came down from Heaven to save us from our sins He did that for us. He put himself in a position that we would be able to reach out and grab hold of Him, and of the eternal life we were meant to live. He allows us to keep Him in our hearts so that we have a chance to live out our lives so that we can reach the eternity we were meant to live.
The only thing standing in the way of you and your purpose is your willingness to fight for it. How are you fighting those daily battles we talked about? Are you prayerfully approaching them with a desire to strive for your eternal life? Or are you making them based off of the world?
