Your heart plays a huge role in directing your life. We think and react with our heart and our emotions all the time. The trouble is that our heart can be deceitful. Our heart can lead us into situations and into places where we are driven to do things that are not part of God’s will, but part of Satan's plan. Our heart is open an vulnerable to the things of this world. We need to trust God’s it will never lead us astray. Our own heart however, can easily be caught up in the world.
Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.
Thinking about what you need to protect in your life, there are things that probably come to mind: your spouse, your kids, etc. We all want to respond to our lives in ways that will protect the things we love. We can’t forget our heart for God when we consider these things. We have a deceitful heart that can lead us to things of this world and harm us if we aren’t carefully considering God in our decisions.
When you protect your heart, you are really protecting your character. You have to be careful with what and who you allow into your life. If you don’t, you will find yourself in spiritual darkness. Let’s talk about a few ways to build a support system for your deceitful heart.
Moral failure is always a result of you letting your guard down on your heart.
-Pastor Jason Williams
One of the ways you can tell that you are drifting away from God and letting your heart be controlled by the world is that your language changes. This can be in many forms. It can be gossip, it can be the actual words you are using, it can be inflating the truth. Our mouth communicates what is in our heart. The way we talk about our lives and what is happening to us can let us know exactly what’s going on in outer hearts. We have to recognize the value in protecting our hearts.
Proverbs 4:24 ESV
Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.
What we focus on shows where our priorities lie. If you are focusing on God, God will be your priority and it will be evident in your life. If your priorities are on money, or social media, or the things of this world, you are vulnerable to attacks of your heart. The devil will come after you if you aren’t guarding your heart against his attacks. It is healthy to pay attention to the word of God. The word of God and what he is speaking to you needs to be your top priority in life. What you allow to influence your heart will ultimately guide your life. A toxic environment will lead to a toxic life if you aren’t staying in tune with God at all times.
Have you ever heard the saying that evil company corrupts good morals? It is so true. You can be corrupted by the things of this world that we are in if you follow your deceitful heart instead of God's word.
Luke 6:45 ESV
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
I mean, I don’t know about you, but memorization wasn’t my strong suit in school. But God’s word is something we should want to memorize. We want to use His words in our lives and in our hearts. We can’t lose sight of the fact that we need God’s living word as our breath for life. God’s word should be repeating in our heads as we go throughout our day. It should be the guiding light to what we pursue, what we focus on, what we say in our lives.
When you turn on the tv, the radio, social media, you are being influenced by the world. If you don’t have God’s word in your heart, you will be swayed by these influences of the world.
One of the tactics of Satan is to use any means he can to cause you to compromise your faith in the Lord. He does this through all of the things that happen to you on a day to day basis.
And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
You have to set clear moral boundaries for your life and your relationships. If you let the world’s ungodliness influence your heart, your behavior will eventually reflect the world. You need to set clear boundaries for what you will participate in. These should be apparent or you, and also to others. It can be so easy to be sucked in to the wrong types of influence. Don’t settle for anything less than those boundaries you have set. You were meant to be salt and light for God. You are not mean to be a part of this world.
Do you ever feel like you don’t belong, like you are unsettled in the world you live in? That’s good. You should feel that way. This world is not your home. You are passing through it. Your home is in Heaven with Jesus. That’s why you feel uncomfortable here. That’s why when your priorities shift towards the world you start to see things in your life fall apart. That is why when things start to go awry it seems like you can’t get out, like you are stuck. You are trying to fit into the wrong world. Don’t try to fit into this world, work to make sure you are in line with God’s world.
Proverbs 4:20-22 ESV
My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.
You have to protect your heart. To do that, you HAVE to have God’s word living in your heart. Each day when you wake up, you have to decide if you are going to work for the Lord or for the world. Be honest about where to stand so that you can continue to grow in the Lord. You have to let your guard down and come to God so you can be transformed by His glory.
