Better

Watch the whole sermon here

This time of year is when people start to look into new year's resolutions or for a fresh start. One of the things we wanted to do as a church this year is pick one word to represent how we will approach 2022. What we realized is that if we choose a word like "better", we can only be better with God's help, because he is so good. This means a better relationship with our families, our friends, and in our relationship with God. If we aren’t striving to be better, we are becoming complacent. The living God is within us and we have the power to learn and grow through him. What better path to being better than by using the power of God we are all living with?

better

We have to focus on our relationships. We can’t just let them coast through and hope that they will improve or will be built on their own. You have to focus on relationships in order for them to get better. If we don’t choose this focus as a priority, there can be a growing gap in those relationships. Just like with anything else you want to succeed at, you have to put in the effort and the energy. Relationships don't get better on their own. We have to work hard and pray hard to be able to realize the ways that we need to get better and then work to make those areas better. Jesus is greater than anything we face on this earth, and with Him, we can be better.

This better starts within each of us, but the church has to get better too. If we don’t, people’s eternities are at stake. Following Jesus will lead us into a better life and a better relationship with Him and with the people around us. The church is called to be salt and light and to bring God's word to the rest of the earth. It is our eternal mission. Our thoughts will often times lead to what our reality is. If we focus on something and think about it with purpose, we will be able to drive towards those things much easier. Whether it be a better relationship with God, to spread His word, to have impactful conversations about Him, we have to start by focusing on each of those things.

God's way of beginning his big work is in the small things.

-Pastor Jason Williams

God's work starts with small things. It's the small things that happen in our lives that can drive us to accomplish the big things in our lives. Think about the stories you know about the Bible. Jesus was brought to earth to save all of us, but he started as a small baby. How about the stone that David threw at Goliath? Think about how small an acorn is and how big and beautiful an oak tree is?? We have to be faithful and patient in the small things in our lives in order to be trusted in the larger things. If we can't take care of that acorn, we surely cannot take care of that beautiful oak tree. We have to do better church!!!

Zacheriah 4:6-10

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, "The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.

In the verse above, you notice that we are told to rejoice in the small things. When we think about God, we usually think about the big things. We think about the miracles we have heard about, and we miss the small things. The small things are usually where God is working. They are usually something that is a more arduous task, they are usually more hard work, but really, it's the small things that grow us the most. For all of God’s bigness, he has a remarkable love for the small things.

Little things are important. Not simply because of what they are, but because of what they can become. It is usually the small things that turn into the big things that everyone seems to want. Everyone wants a good relationship with their kids, or their spouse, but are the small things happening to invest in those relationships? Are you leaving work on time so that you can get home to your family? Are you putting your phone down when you get home and prioritizing the people around you? If you aren't willing to do the small things, you are going to miss the chance to have a better relationship with those you love. People often want better financial stability, but often aren't willing to save their money instead of spending it. Don't forget that the small things are what build up to those big things you are looking for in your life.

1 Corinthians 10:31

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

Do EVERYTHING for the glory of God. Even the small things. The small things done for God's glory can all add up to those big miracles for God. Do them even when no one is looking. Because God is always looking.

Matthew 25:21

His master said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.

God is at work in the small things. If you aren't ready and willing to do better in the little things, chances are you will miss God all together. You will miss all of the amazing things that he has in store.
