Considering Sunday’s message, a couple of verses stood out to me like never before when reading this first chapter, with the thoughts of being ACTIVATED believers, it will give you a different perspective when reading this account. Of course, Acts 1:8 stands out, because it is our commission, our assignment, Jesus is leaving us some work to do, through the power of the Holy Spirit. I am certain we all understand it, accept it, and have a heart to go and do it. But then, verses 10 and 11 caught my attention, and I was left wandering to myself, "oh man, this is me sometimes."
Those verses say, "and while they were GAZING into heaven as He went, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, "Men of Galilee, WHY do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."
The tone of these verses seemed to change from my previous reading of the same verses. It said to me, "what are you waiting for? You've got work to do!" He told you what to do, go do it! I can see myself as one of the disciples staring up into heaven, thinking to myself, "when is He coming back?" or, I sure miss the days He was here, and I was just following Him along. My mind certainly would not have been on the mission, but on the longing for His presence. I would have been spoiled so to speak by His ability to make it happen, instead of the job at hand that He was equipping me to do. I still have the tendency to "sit back" and let Him do all the work, when in reality, He has COMMANDED me to do MY part of the work! I am not second string, I'm in the starting lineup, and just being honest, with the power of the Holy Spirit, I have the equipping to be on the ALL-STAR team. That sounds a little braggadocio, but in giving Him the glory, I realize that Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world! So, I say, what are you gazing at? Get to work! Be ACTIVATED!
